Trigger Point Injection
Trigger Point Injection or TPI is a treatment used at Progressive Health & Rehabilitation to alleviate pain from a tight or spastic area of a muscle that does not relax. These knots irritate nerves and cause referred pain to other areas of the body. Trigger points may result from injury or trauma or a chronic overuse situation. Essentially any physical, chemical or emotional stress may result in a trigger point.
A small needle, either with or without medication is inserted into the trigger point. The knot is then made inactive and the pain is alleviated. Multiple sites may be injected in one visit and the procedure itself takes only minutes to perform. Again, we use TPI only as part of a solution to correct an underlying problem. The goal is to get the patient out of pain so that he or she may begin a therapy program to sustain long term relief and ultimate resolution.
